Johnson’s Buffalo Ranch was started by Denny and Nancy Johnson. The Johnsons are city bred and raised but found their way to the country in 1968. One thing led to another and after 7 years Denny quit the commute and we went farming full time. For the next 30 years the Johnsons were pig farmers. After 30 years they wanted a change and the idea to get into Buffalo made sense after they had purchased another farm that had pasture area. The first purchase of 15 buffalo in 2003 started this new endeavor. Denny and Nancy are now in the process of passing the business on to their daughter and son-in-law, Al & Tammy George. Interestingly Al also did not grow up on the farm but loves animals and wants to try his hand at farming and raising these exceptional animals.
The ranch is located a short drive south of the Twin Cities in beautiful northern Rice County just 10 miles west of I-35 on Highway 19. Today there are over 150 animals on the 100+ acres of fenced in pasture. They are well cared for and are naturally fed and have no growth hormones nor other chemicals introduced into them. Their main feed is grass and hay and are supplemented with organic oat screenings.
